SFACT is delighted to share good news from Indonesia. Our scholarship grantee, Syahril Abdul Raup just received his PhD after successfully defending his dissertation at the IPB University, Bogor, West Java – Indonesia, on February 5th, 2025, during a doctoral promotion open senate session. He becomes the first Indonesia scholar to be awarded a PhD under SFACT scholarship.
Syahril, also known as Chali, currently employed with the Ministry Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF) in Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi, as the Head of Ocean Fishing Port, Directorate General Capture Fishing. He presented his research entitled “Tuna Fisheries Management Through Integrated Data Collection (Case Study on Fisheries Management Area 573)”. After earning his master’s degree from the Coastal and Marine Resources Management Study Program in 2004, Chali began his doctoral studies there in 2020. Chali received funding from SFACT for his research and studies.
Chali has published several publications in reputable national and international scientific journals during his doctoral studies. “Improving the accuracy of tuna fishery data using the fishing e-logbook in FMA 573,” “Tuna Fisheries Data Accuracy in WPPNRI 573,” “Improving on small-scale tuna fisheries data quality through the application of e-logbook system,” and “Integration of tuna fishery data collection in the Southern Waters of Java (FMA-573)” were the four articles published.
