Ahmad Husein – October 2026
In August 2026, the Global Journal of Environmental Science and Management published a new study led by Aris Budiarto, one of SFACT’s doctoral scholarship awardees, and seven co-authors. “Environmental status of silky sharks in the Eastern Indian Ocean from length-based catch data”
The study analysed catch data of silky sharks landed at Tanjung Luar Fishing Port, Indonesia, between 2017 and 2023. Findings included declining catch rates, a high proportion of sharks below published maturity size thresholds, and an increase in female sharks of total landings in 2023.
These findings raise concerns about the sustainability of the fishery and highlight the importance of continued monitoring and precautionary fisheries management to support silky shark populations.
Aris’s doctoral research continues, with his studies expected to conclude in 2027 and another paper anticipated next year.
Congratulations to Aris and his co-authors on this important contribution to fisheries research.
