SFACT Supports Selvia Oktaviyani in the Doctoral Study of Scalloped Hammerhead Sharks

Ahmad Husein – October 2025

SFACT is delighted to provide support for Selvia Oktaviyani, a researcher at the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), for her doctoral research at IPB University, Bogor, Indonesia. He is conducting a study on the population structure, stock status, and management of scalloped hammerhead sharks (Sphyrna lewini) in Indonesian waters.

Listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List, this species is also among the most frequently landed sharks in Indonesia. Her study combines fishery-dependent information, genetic analysis, and stock assessment modeling to build a comprehensive understanding of the species. Through this integration, she aims to determine how scalloped hammerhead populations are connected across different regions of Indonesia and to evaluate their current stock status.

The outcomes of this research will help identify biologically meaningful management units, which are crucial for designing science-based and region-specific strategies to regulate harvest and support conservation. “I believe this research makes a direct contribution to shark conservation and sustainable fisheries management in Indonesia,” said Selvia. Understanding population structure and exploitation levels is essential to ensure that conservation measures are effective and based on sound science. Ultimately, her goal is to generate robust scientific evidence that can guide decision-making and support the development of effective, science-based management and conservation strategies for scalloped hammerhead sharks in Indonesia.
