Scott Schrempf Starts His PHD Study

Ahmad Husein – June 2026

We are delighted to welcome Scott Schrempf as the next SFACT Scholarship’s awardee. Scott started his PhD in May 2026 supervised by Dr. Megan Bailey at Dalhousie University. His doctoral thesis, entitled ‘Addressing Inequity in International Tuna Fisheries Management through a Human Rights-Centred Approach,’ will focus on how human rights principles can help to promote greater equity and sustainability in the governance of international tuna fisheries, specifically in the Indian Ocean.

Scott’s line of research extends from his Master of Marine Management studies in 2023-2024 focused on the management of yellowfin tuna in the Indian Ocean. In that work, he investigated the economic and policy barriers to effective and equitable fisheries governance. His PhD will take this perspective further by considering the potential for a human rights lens to tackle the systemic issues in international fisheries management, informed by multidisciplinary lenses of fisheries management, international law, political economy and political ecology.

Scott’s work is in line with our mission to protect and to improve the livelihoods of coastal communities in vulnerable Coastal States in the Indian Ocean through advocacy, to empower those communities through education, and to conserve marine ecosystems through local, grassroots programmes.
