Major Progress in Somalia’s IOTC Compliance!

Abbie Topping – May 2025

We’re proud to share a major step forward in Somalia’s fisheries data and compliance efforts with the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC).

Thanks to a targeted training workshop held in Mogadishu and led by the highly qualified and well-respected Dr. Shiham Adam, Somalia’s IOTC compliance rate has jumped from just 7.3% to 51% – a phenomenal achievement during the workshop’s timeframe! 📈💪

The workshop conducted in June 2025, focused on improving data reporting and hands-on training with electronic-Monitoring and Reporting Information System (eMARIS) IOTC’s electronic monitoring and reporting platform. It brought together key staff from the Ministry of Fisheries and Blue Economy to tackle reporting challenges and build long-term systems for quality data submission. Participants also practiced in defining fisheries and identifying spatial grids, including an exercise of compiling vessel records for Somalia.

The Ministry of Fisheries and Blue Economy, the competent Authority of Somalia’s Fisheries has demonstrated commitment to this important training and IOTC’s compliance regime. “We are keen to improve our capacity to meet required regulatory and operational standards “, said Abdi Dirshe, the Director General of the Ministry.

This work was made possible through the support of SFACT, as we continue to assist in sustainable, inclusive, and effective fisheries governance across the region.

This kind of progress is what real impact looks like – well done to all involved!
